Pouches
The Pouches are a meditation on sight loss. they are stuck down with cover film and they look tactile. The silk chiffon collages they contain are made from the remains from the Room in a Room series. They carry the appearance of purposeful cut outs which of course they are.
From an urgent need to reconstruct the world around me rather than fit an existing world of convenient stuff and narrative, I have needed to work from the ground up, literally;
As Professor Eilean Hooper Greenhill pointed out in a review from 2002 When considering the nature of my sewn paintings she said; "even the ground cannot be taken for granted but becomes part of the system of signs that constitutes the work
The 4' x 6' versions came from photographs taken by friends and family of an exhibition in the Butter market in Brindley Place Birmingham in 2009. They saw the accident of installation as another image possibility. Kate's version of the room in a room' exploited the reds from another sewn work hanging over and above. The bright circles in the 'Silent Figures' are the lighting-up spots of light in the dark of Brindley Place at night.
I experimented with cutting up one drawing. I did not want the narrative to sink into the beginning/middle and end of comfortable literary habit. I took each 12" square to my work table to mix colour freely. Finally I stuck the squares together and the image is edgy and tense; not matching anywhere.
Pouches
Pouches are a response to my slowly degrading sight through macular degeneration. Blurred edges that make the near and far ambiguous as my own site plays similar tricks on my own perceptions. I enjoyed taping the images, on a bright day, so that on some of the slides the landscape is visible through the pouches and at the edges of the pouches.
